The “cheaper module” myth

What I actually check before buying a Sierra Wireless module

In January 2025, we had to replace a broken router in a rail-side cabinet. Our integrator offered a Sierra Wireless C300 config with a newer radio inside. Five years ago, an IoT module purchase was a one-time event. You picked a modem, built a board, shipped a product, and maybe updated firmware twice. Today, the questions are different: does the module support the carrier bands your customers will need in two years? Can the gateway be managed remotely? Is there a migration path when the module goes end-of-life?
What was best practice in 2020 may not apply in 2025. The fundamentals haven’t changed—TCO, fit, reliability, support. But the execution has transformed. You are no longer buying a piece of silicon. You are buying a path to the next network upgrade.
So, what is Sierra Wireless?
Sierra Wireless is a cellular communications company that sells modules, gateways, and routers. But that answer is not enough for a procurement decision. The real answer depends on whether you need an embedded module like the MC7354, an integrated gateway like the LS300, or a custom configuration like our C300.
I still use Sierra Wireless for some projects. Not because the brand is perfect, but because the product families are broad enough that I can find a fit without going through five vendors. But I never start with the brand. I start with the problem, the network, the environment, and the budget.
If someone asks me “what is sierra-wireless?” in a procurement context, I tell them: it is a supplier, not a solution. The solution has to come from your spec.
