What Is Network? A Sierra Wireless Modem Buying Checklist for RV55, Platinum BP5450, and Routers

I'm a procurement manager at a 200-person field services company. I've managed our communications equipment budget for six years, negotiated with more than 30 vendors, and tracked every order in our cost system. This checklist is what I wish I'd read before I ordered our first batch of Sierra Wireless modems and routers.

Ask a procurement person and you should get a delivery system—because that's what it comes down to in a budget: data has to get from point A to point B, predictably.

If the envelope passes but the sorting equipment can't read the address, it doesn't matter how fast the airplane is. A Sierra Wireless router works the same way. The device might support the right LTE bands, but if the carrier's core network doesn't recognize that device's IMEI or honor the APN, your data isn't going anywhere.

So before you compare modem specs, write down your actual network requirements:

  • Carrier approval: Is the exact model and part number on the carrier's device list? Not 'similar' model. Exact.
  • Frequency bands: Which bands are live at your sites? If you're in the public-safety space, band 14 for FirstNet can be a separate item.
  • SIM architecture: Physical SIM, eSIM, or eUICC? Who provisions it? Is that cost in the quote?
  • Network access: Public IP, private APN, static IP, VPN? This changes the router configuration and the monthly cost.
  • Security: Do you need firewall zones, certificate-based authentication, or a specific VPN protocol?
  • Management: Local web page, cloud management, or both? User training is a line item too.

That last bullet is the one most people ignore. A router is not a stand-alone appliance. It's an endpoint inside a network. And if you don't know how it's going to be managed, you're buying an expensive box that will be configured under pressure.

This is the counterintuitive part: I don't start with the router specs. I start with carrier support. A perfect router on paper is a paperweight if your carrier treats it like an unsupported device.

Step 2: Compare TCO, not the sticker price

Now you can look at hardware. But don't compare list prices. Compare total cost of ownership over three years.

When I audited our 2023 spending, I found that roughly 35% of our budget overruns came from accessories and setup work that weren't in the initial quote. That audit changed our procurement policy. Now we require quotes from three vendors minimum, and every quote has to show line items for accessories, licensing, support, and shipping.

Here's a real decision I went back and forth on last year. We needed to replace a dozen field routers. One quote came in about 30% lower on hardware. The spreadsheet said buy the cheaper units. My gut said something was missing. I asked for an itemized quote. That's when the cheaper unit stopped looking cheap: separate VPN license, a different antenna kit, and two days of setup because the default firmware didn't include our carrier's APN profile. It wasn't 30% cheaper. It was maybe 4% cheaper, with three times the risk. I went with the Sierra Wireless routers, and I'm glad I checked the line items before signing.

Add these to your TCO calculator:

Step 3: Plan provisioning, spares, and acceptance tests

This is also where I'll say something that may sound strange from a cost controller: if your project is temporary, maybe a rugged permanent router is overkill. A specialist who knows their limits will tell you 'this isn't what I'd use for a two-week pop-up network.' I'd rather work with a vendor who says 'this isn't our strength' than one who promises the world. That honesty is worth paying for.

Common mistakes to catch in purchase orders

Let me leave you with a few cautions.

Don't order 'global' and assume it's universal. Hardware variants exist for a reason. Check the exact part number against your carrier's approved device list.

Don't trust 'plug and play' as a contract term. In procurement, 'works' is an assumption. Write down your acceptance criteria. Per FTC advertising guidelines, claims like 'mission-critical' have to be truthful and substantiated (source: FTC Business Guidance on Advertising, ftc.gov). Use that standard when you review vendor specs—ask for the test report behind the claim.

Don't buy an accessory before reading the manual. The Platinum BP5450 might be the right power accessory for one Sierra Wireless product and wrong for another. The model name tells you what it is, not whether it fits your network. The RV55 manual's hardware section answers that.

Don't forget what a router is. A router is an endpoint. The network is the carrier, the APN, the firewall, the VPN, the management platform, and the people who maintain it. Buy for the whole system, not the box.

There's something satisfying about a purchase that doesn't require a second PO to fix. Do the network homework, calculate the total cost, and read the manual while you still have time.
