Sierra Wireless IoT Deployment Checklist: From AirLink GX440 to C300

Honestly, I almost didn't call this a checklist. Every wireless deployment has its own quirks, and the last thing you need is a generic list that treats a single router like a cloud server. But when you're looking at sierra wireless iot gateways, the same six questions keep coming up. In my role coordinating wireless rollouts, I've used this list to get AirLink GX440 routers into fire trucks, C300 gateways into industrial buildings, and modules into proof-of-concept boxes. Most of those were rush jobs. Some were rush jobs with less than 48 hours to quote and ship. That's where this list came from.

I've coordinated maybe 80 gateway deployments. Maybe 90, I'd have to check the project log. The failures weren't about download speeds. They were about wrong SKUs, missing antennas, and management configured too late.

This is written for small orders too. The first time I bought a Sierra Wireless AirLink GX440, it was a single unit for a demo. A vendor that treats a one-unit order with respect is the same vendor you go back to when the pilot becomes a fleet. Today's small test is tomorrow's fleet.

Who this checklist is for

If you're a manufacturing engineer, an IT person for a school district, or a founder building a connected machine, this is for you. You don't need a procurement department to buy a gateway. You need a consistent way to check the details before you spend money.

Skip this if you already have a large deployment using the exact same SKU and carrier. But even then, a second check never hurts.

The six-step deployment checklist

Step 1: Confirm the exact model and variant

The Sierra Wireless AirLink GX440 is not one product. It has regional and carrier variants. The C300 is the same story. A datasheet that says 4G LTE doesn't tell you whether you've got Bands 2, 4, 12, or Band 14 for FirstNet. If you order the wrong variant, you'll lose weeks.

It's tempting to think any LTE gateway will work anywhere. But identical specs from different variants can produce wildly different outcomes. Check the product label, the firmware version, and the carrier approval sheet before you purchase. If you're buying through a distributer, ask them to confirm the part number is the exact one for your carrier.

Step 2: Check certifications and carrier approvals

Before you put a gateway in the field, confirm that the exact SKU is certified for the country and network. For the United States, that means FCC ID and PTCRB, plus carrier-specific approvals. For public-safety projects, look for FirstNet readiness. For private networks, ask about CBRS and OnGo certifications if you plan to use Band 48.

Per FTC guidelines at ftc.gov, security features should be built into IoT devices rather than added later. So also ask about secure boot and signed firmware. If a supplier cannot send you a certification document, treat that as a red flag.

Step 3: Plan power and physical mounting

If I remember correctly, the standard GX440 accepts 9 to 36 VDC input. That gives you room for vehicles and industrial cabinets. The C300 is a different creature, so don't assume the same pinout or PoE behavior. Get the installation guide for the exact SKU and check your site's power range.

One thing people forget: gateway placement affects antenna cable length. A high-mounted antenna is great, but not if you need a 20-foot cable with too much loss. Plan the physical mount before you drill holes. In vehicles, use a fuse on the power line. In fixed sites, make sure the enclosure has airflow if the gateway is in a cabinet.

Step 4: Verify antennas are included or specified

Gateways sometimes ship without antennas, or with a specific set of antennas. The SKU may say 'modem only' and leave you scrambling. We once had six units arrive with no LTE antennas because nobody checked the internal part number. That is a late-night phone call you don't want.

If your deployment needs external antennas, order them at the same time. Check connector types too. If you're adapting connectors, use proper pigtails. A good antenna can make a weak signal usable; a mismatch can turn a strong signal into noise.

Step 5: Put the gateway into a management plane immediately

ALEOS is the operating system on many Sierra Wireless gateways. AirLink Management Service or a similar platform lets you update firmware, push configs, and reboot devices remotely. Do not wait until after deployment. Set up at least one gateway in the management plane first.

So glad we did this on a recent C300 project. A gateway froze at 2 a.m. at a remote site. We rebooted it from a laptop before the client even noticed. Had we waited to configure management, that would have been a physical site visit.

Step 6: Run a pilot with real antennas and real traffic

Pilots are not about checking signal bars on your phone. Use the actual gateway, the actual antennas, and the actual mounting location. Look at metrics like RSRP, SINR, and data usage from ALEOS. Run this for at least a few days. A one-hour test in a parking lot says almost nothing.

This is the step most people skip. Especially for a rush order. I get it. You want to ship as soon as possible. But a failed production deployment costs more than a thoughtful three-day pilot.

Common mistakes I see

Mistake 1: Comparing vendors at the wrong layer

Search for 'Cypress vs Sierra' online and you'll find a lot of older conversations about chips and modules. Cypress, now part of Infineon, makes semiconductors. Sierra Wireless makes integrated modules and gateways. That comparison may matter at the chip-design level, but not when you're choosing a gateway for a truck.

What actually matters is the whole system: certifications, management software, support, and lifecycle. The chip inside is one step in the chain.

Mistake 2: Treating all IoT devices as one category

If a project spec mentions HeartGuide, pause. HeartGuide-style heart wearables are consumer and medical IoT, not industrial vehicle IoT. You wouldn't deploy an AirLink GX440 in a wristband. And you wouldn't put a consumer wearable in a police car. The word 'IoT' covers both, but the requirements are completely different.

The surprise isn't the technology. It's how often teams over-order rugged gear for a small consumer-style project, or under-order for a harsh environment. Know which tier you're in before you buy.

Mistake 3: Ignoring firmware versions

When you receive a gateway, check the installed firmware. Old firmware may lack security patches or carrier profile updates. Set a policy to standardize firmware across the fleet. If a vendor tells you 'different versions are fine,' ask them to put that in writing.

Bottom line: start with the right SKU, verify the certifications, plan power and antennas, enable management, and pilot before scaling. This applies whether you're buying one C300 or a hundred GX440s.

And if you're a smaller buyer, don't settle for less support. A supplier that treats a one-unit order as unimportant is showing you how they will treat your next order, too.
